Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) Stage 2

Project Name: Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) Stage 2 – Enabling Trust and Deployment Through Verified Connected Intersections Project
Project Team: Model Deployment of Connected and Automated Mobility (MDCAM) Consortium
Timeframe: May 15, 2025 – May 14, 2028
Sponsor(s): Utah Department of Transportation
Synopsis:

The goals of the project are the following:

  • Expand the number of public sector agencies that use the CI validation tools developed in Stage 1 in conjunction with the SAE Connected Transportation Interoperability Committee (CTIC) to validate CIs and gain the trust from OEMs and SCMS Manager.
  • Enhance and improve the validation tools and their user interface, based on feedback and lessons learned in Stage 1 and feedback the team expects to receive as additional intersections are tested for validation in Stage 2, and demonstrate automation of report collection and processing at scale.
  • Address some additional challenges that were identified during Stage 1 and reported in the Implementation Plan submitted on July 15, 2024, such as unique aspects of how signal controllers maintain local time that vary by controller manufacturer.
